Russell Leads Mercedes Front-Row Lockout for 2026 Chinese GP Sprint
The starting lineup for the Sprint race at the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix has been revealed following an action-packed Sprint Qualifying session at the Shanghai International Circuit.
At the front of the grid will be George Russell, who delivered a brilliant performance to secure pole position for the sprint. The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team driver set the fastest lap of the session, finishing three-tenths of a second ahead of his rookie team-mate Kimi Antonelli.
The result gives Mercedes a commanding front-row lockout for the short race and underlines the strong form the team has shown at the start of the 2026 season. Russell, who currently leads the championship standings, has looked comfortable throughout the weekend and will be confident of converting pole into victory when the sprint begins.
Antonelli’s second-place finish also represents another impressive performance from the young Italian. Despite being new to Formula One, the Mercedes rookie has quickly adapted to the pace of the sport and continues to prove he can challenge at the front alongside his experienced team-mate.
Starting third on the grid will be the reigning world champion Lando Norris. The McLaren driver emerged as the closest competitor to Mercedes during the qualifying session, though he was unable to match the outright pace of the silver cars. Norris will still be well positioned to challenge for the lead if opportunities arise during the sprint race.
In fourth place sits seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who delivered a strong lap for Scuderia Ferrari. Hamilton managed to outqualify his Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc, marking a positive step for the Italian team as they aim to stay in the fight at the front of the grid.
McLaren’s Oscar Piastri will begin the sprint from fifth position, placing him directly behind Hamilton and just ahead of Leclerc, who lines up sixth. Pierre Gasly secured seventh for Alpine F1 Team, continuing a solid showing for the French outfit during the session.
One of the biggest surprises of the qualifying session came from Max Verstappen. The Red Bull Racing driver endured a difficult outing and could only manage eighth on the grid, a result far from what the four-time world champion would have hoped for. His team-mate Isack Hadjar also struggled and will start the sprint race from tenth place.
Between them, Oliver Bearman produced an impressive effort to secure ninth for the Haas F1 Team, highlighting the competitive nature of the midfield battle.
The Shanghai sprint race will be the first sprint event of the 2026 Formula One season, offering drivers the chance to earn valuable additional championship points before the main Grand Prix on Sunday. With Mercedes occupying the entire front row and several title contenders positioned closely behind, the short race promises intense action as drivers push to gain positions early in the weekend.
However, the grid remains provisional until it receives official confirmation from the sport’s governing body, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile.
