F1 Sprint Race Results: Lewis Hamilton survives safety car chaos to secure podium at Chinese GP

The sprint race at the Chinese Grand Prix delivered drama, penalties, and a late safety car twist as George Russell continued his perfect start to the 2026 Formula 1 season with another victory. The Mercedes driver George Russell fought off strong pressure from Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc to secure the sprint win at the Chinese Grand Prix, while Hamilton battled through late-race chaos to claim a podium finish for Ferrari.

The short-format race at the Shanghai International Circuit proved anything but straightforward, with fierce on-track battles, penalties, and a late safety car reshuffling the order in the closing stages.

Russell, who has now maintained a 100 percent win record in the 2026 campaign’s sprint events and races so far, once again demonstrated the pace of the Mercedes package. However, the Briton had to fight hard to secure victory after Hamilton surged past him at the start.

Starting from fourth on the grid, Hamilton produced a lightning getaway in his Scuderia Ferrari machine. The seven-time world champion attacked immediately through the opening corners, briefly taking the lead from Russell and igniting an early duel between two of the most experienced drivers on the grid.

For several laps the pair swapped positions as Russell attempted to reassert control. Meanwhile, Ferrari’s other contender, Leclerc, remained close behind, ready to capitalize on any mistake from the battling duo ahead.

Eventually Russell managed to edge ahead and build a small but crucial gap. While the Mercedes driver focused on consolidating his lead, Hamilton found himself under growing pressure from his Ferrari team-mate.

What followed was one of the most tense moments of the sprint race. Hamilton and Leclerc went wheel-to-wheel in a fierce intra-team battle that nearly resulted in contact. The Ferrari pair raced aggressively but cleanly, thrilling spectators as they fought for track position.

The fight soon drew another contender into the mix. Rookie sensation Kimi Antonelli, driving the second Mercedes, closed rapidly and managed to pass Hamilton on track after recovering from a poor start.

Antonelli’s race, however, took a damaging turn after stewards issued a ten-second penalty for a first-lap collision involving Isack Hadjar. The incident had been triggered after Antonelli dropped from second to seventh off the line and became entangled in heavy traffic at Turn 1.

Despite his impressive recovery drive and overtake on Hamilton, the penalty ultimately erased any realistic chance of a podium finish.

The race then took another dramatic twist late on when Nico Hulkenberg retired from the event with just a handful of laps remaining. His stranded car forced race control to deploy the safety car, compressing the field and triggering a flurry of pit stops across the grid.

Most teams opted for fresh tyres during the caution period, including Ferrari, who performed a double-stack pit stop for both Hamilton and Leclerc. While efficient, the strategy temporarily dropped Hamilton behind Lando Norris of McLaren.

When racing resumed, Hamilton wasted little time reclaiming his place. The Ferrari veteran executed a decisive overtake on Norris shortly after the restart, securing third position and ensuring Ferrari celebrated a double podium in the sprint classification.

Leclerc finished second behind Russell, continuing Ferrari’s strong form and underlining the team’s position as the closest challenger to Mercedes at the start of the 2026 season.

Behind the podium trio, Norris finished fourth for McLaren, followed by Antonelli in fifth after his penalty was applied. Oscar Piastri brought the second McLaren home in sixth place.

Further down the order, Liam Lawson delivered a solid performance to finish seventh for Racing Bulls, while Oliver Bearman secured the final points-paying position in eighth for Haas.

It was another difficult outing for Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing. The reigning four-time world champion could only manage ninth place and narrowly missed out on scoring points in the sprint. His team-mate Hadjar endured an even more frustrating race, finishing 15th after his earlier incident with Antonelli.

The result continues a concerning trend for Red Bull, whose struggles have been a major talking point throughout the opening rounds of the season.
