F1 2026 Chinese Grand Prix starting grid with penalties ap…read more

The starting grid for the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix has been officially confirmed following an action-packed qualifying session at the Shanghai International Circuit. Drivers battled for position on Saturday to determine the order for Sunday’s race, setting up what promises to be a thrilling contest in China.

One of the standout moments of qualifying came from teenage sensation Kimi Antonelli, who secured pole position for the race. At just 19 years old, the young Italian driver made history by becoming the youngest pole-sitter ever in the Formula One World Championship. Driving for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, Antonelli delivered a remarkable lap under pressure to claim the top spot on the grid.

His teammate George Russell will start alongside him on the front row after recovering from a challenging qualifying session. Russell experienced an electrical problem that forced his car to stop briefly on track, creating uncertainty about his chances of securing a competitive position. However, the British driver managed to produce an impressive final flying lap that was good enough to place him second on the grid, giving Mercedes a strong front-row lockout for the race.

Behind the Mercedes pair, the Scuderia Ferrari drivers will occupy the second row. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton qualified in third position, while his teammate Charles Leclerc will start fourth. The Ferrari duo were already involved in a tense on-track battle during Saturday’s sprint race, suggesting that competition between the two drivers could continue throughout the main race on Sunday.

The third row will feature the McLaren Formula 1 Team drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, who secured fifth and sixth places respectively. McLaren has shown promising speed so far this season and will be hoping to challenge the teams ahead if opportunities arise during the race.

Further down the grid, Pierre Gasly qualified seventh for Alpine F1 Team, while reigning champion Max Verstappen could only manage eighth place for Red Bull Racing, a result that leaves him with work to do if he wants to fight for victory. His teammate Isack Hadjar starts ninth, and Oliver Bearman rounds out the top ten for the Haas F1 Team.

The midfield positions feature Nico Hülkenberg in 11th for Audi F1 Team, followed by Franco Colapinto in 12th for Alpine and Esteban Ocon in 13th for Haas. Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad of Racing Bulls will start 14th and 15th respectively, while rookie Gabriel Bortoleto lines up in 16th for Audi.

At the back of the grid are Carlos Sainz and Alexander Albon representing Williams Racing in 17th and 18th places. Veteran driver Fernando Alonso will start 19th for Aston Martin F1 Team, while Valtteri Bottas lines up 20th for the Cadillac Formula 1 Team. The final row features Lance Stroll in 21st for Aston Martin and Sergio Pérez in 22nd for Cadillac.
