Scotland were leading 38-31 heading into the dying stages of the game after sparking a remarkable comeback.
The Scots at one point were 31-0 down against England as their hosts ran riot at Twickenham.
But a stunning second-half performance looked to have won Scotland the game when Sam Johnson crossed over for a try with just minutes remaining.
It appeared as though Scotland would hold on for a famous win until three minutes past the 80, when George Ford crossed over and converted for a late leveller.

And Scotland coach Townsend looked devastated in the stands.

After the match Scotland fly-half Finn Russell said: “I’m gutted.
“At half-time everyone would have written Scotland off.
