Phil Thompson, a former favorite on Soccer Saturday, remembered that his defensive error greatly displeased manager Bob Paisley.
Thompson recalled: “The biggest dressing down I ever got? It was from Bob Paisley at Aston Villa. I accidentally scored an own goal past Ray Clemence, and after the match – we had just won the league and conceded only 16 goals all season.
“And I sliced one into our own net at Villa Park. Bob came into the dressing room and said, ‘Is the captaincy too much for you? Is it getting to you?’
“I replied, ‘You can f-off,’ and he said, ‘What do you mean, f-off?’ All the players burst out laughing. We had lost 3-1, and that was probably the harshest criticism I ever received.”
