Diego Laxalt, a Uruguayan left-back, joined Celtic on loan from AC Milan in October 2020. Celtic manager Neil Lennon urgently needed a replacement for Boli Bolingoli, who was sent to Turkey after violating Covid quarantine rules by taking an unauthorized trip to Spain.

Laxalt was brought in to compete with Greg Taylor for the left-back position.

At the time of his move to Celtic, Laxalt was 28 years old and had earned 24 caps for Uruguay.

He had been signed by AC Milan from Genoa for £16 million in 2018 and had also spent time on loan at Torino before his switch to Glasgow.

Despite his credentials, Laxalt struggled to make a significant impact at Celtic. He made 28 appearances for the team, with his standout moment being a stoppage-time equalizer in a 2-2 draw against Hibernian at Easter Road.

His debut for Celtic came in a match against Rangers at Parkhead, which ended in a 2-0 defeat with goals from Connor Goldson.

Laxalt’s time at Celtic was marred by the team’s overall poor performance during the season. The club was in disarray and missed the chance to secure a historic tenth consecutive league title.

As a result, Laxalt’s loan spell ended without much fanfare, and he returned to AC Milan in the summer of 2021.

Later that year, Laxalt secured a permanent move to Dynamo Moscow, where he remains under contract until June 2026.

Despite his initial promise and high transfer fee, his tenure at Celtic is largely remembered as a disappointment amidst a challenging season for the club.
