Incoming Bulldogs coach Cameron Ciraldo will seek advice from Trent Barrett in a bid to avoid making the same mistakes at Belmore, according to a pair of club greats.

Barrett was sacked in May with one of the worst winning records in Canterbury history, but this week the Dogs went back to the well of Penrith assistants and signed Ciraldo on an extraordinary five-year deal.

Bulldogs premiership winner Braith Anasta believes Ciraldo will only see out that deal on the back of quick success, despite the assurances of general manager Phil Gould.

The knock on Barrett – who Gould axed after winning just five of 34 games – was that he tried to implement methods from one of the best clubs at one of the worst.

Anasta believes Ciraldo will take a different approach and highlighted he’ll have a better squad than Barrett, with star 2023 recruits Viliame Kikau and Reed Mahoney at his disposal.

“You’ve got to be your own coach but you’ve also got to play to the strengths that you’ve got and I think that’s what Baz struggled with,” Anasta told foxsports.com.au.

“He tried to implement Penrith’s styles both in attack and defence with a side that wasn’t capable of it, they didn’t have the standards that all the players at Penrith have.

“Ciraldo comes in with better players, more confidence, and in a position now where the Bulldogs can implement some (Panthers methods).

“You get Kikau and Mahoney, strategies from Penrith around defence and attack… the Bulldogs might be ready for it now but 12 months ago they weren’t.”
