ASTON VILLA Financing Fair Play verdict takes another twist as FA are to……..
Former Aston Villa chief Keith Wyness has backed his old side to avoid a “petty punishment” from the Premier League when new financial rules are introduced.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the new-look regulations “damage clubs who are trying their best to compete”.
Premier League clubs have voted on to introduce a new framework which will cap spending on wages and transfer fees to a percentage of a club’s overall revenue – with the new rules set to replace the controversial Profitability and Sustainability Regulations (PSR).
It is believed any new cap will stand at around 80-85% of a club’s revenue.
Modelling from Football Insider finance guru Kieran Maguire has recently revealed (via X, 11 March) that Aston Villa would struggle to comply with the new rules at their current level of income.
Aston Villa backed to ‘clear’ new financial rules – but it will be ‘tight’, says Wyness
But Unai Emery’s side sit fourth in the Premier League and could win the Europa Conference League this term – potentially boosting their takings for the 2024-25 campaign.
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “The new rules are another issue for Aston Villa.
“It is going to be tight, but it depends on qualifications for Europe and league finishes. I think they’ll be okay.
“I just feel that they’ll just about clear the new 80% threshold.
“This is what I’ve been banging on about. We’re not creating competition in the league, we’re damaging clubs who are trying their best to compete.
“Villa are just one of a few clubs who are potentially facing punishment at a petty level.
“I understand the rules are there, and I understand it is 20 clubs who put the rules together.
“In this case, there are at least 14 clubs who should have a summit about this and try and find a solution. There’s got to be a better formula.”
