The individual responsible for creating an iconic symbol has passed away.

Jack Eskridge, who crafted the emblem for the Dallas Cowboys upon joining the team in 1959, a year prior to its inaugural season, has died at the age of 89 near his residence in a hospital outside Kansas City, as reported by the Dallas Cowboys’ website on Friday.

Despite not being a native Texan, Eskridge had a fondness for the state, having resided there twice in his life for a combined total of 23 years – initially to work with the Cowboys and later to pursue a teaching career, according to his obituary.

Interestingly, Eskridge’s background was in professional basketball rather than football. He played for the Chicago Stags and the Indianapolis Jets before transitioning to coaching as an assistant at the University of Kansas, where he notably contributed to recruiting basketball legend Wilt Chamberlain, as mentioned in his obituary.

Renowned Cowboys coach Tom Landry brought him on as an equipment manager, and when the team required a logo, Eskridge ingeniously devised one featuring the lone star.
