Birmingham City’s plans for the summer window should they avoid relegation from the Championship have been revealed.
Former Wolves and West Brom striker Don Goodman believes Birmingham City have grand plans for the summer
Blues are currently battling to avoid the drop from the Championship and there is talk of them bringing back Gary Rowett to the club. Defeat to Watford last weekend left the club outside the relegation zone on goal difference.
Mark Venus, who has stood in for Tony Mowbray who has been afforded a period of absence because of illness has been unable to register a win since taking interim charge.
It is proposed that Rowett, who was in charge of Millwall will join in the official role as a consultant, but will carry out a majority of the duties that a first-team manager would do.
Should Birmingham avoid the drop, it is of the belief that they will go ‘big’ in the summer in terms of player recruitment. It will represent the second summer window that Shelby Companies Limited will have had since their takeover, and it could mean a push for the Premier League.
“I’m led to believe in the summer they will want to go big and ambitious in terms of transfers with a view to pushing up at the other end of the Championship,” said Goodman on Sky Sports News discussing Rowett’s proposed return to the club.
Birmingham’s 2023–24 season is currently on hold due to the international break, however they will soon play two games over the Easter break. On Good Friday, they visit Loftus Road to play relegation rivals QPR; on Easter Monday, they host play-off contenders Preston North End.
Birmingham have fixtures against Rotherham United and Huddersfield Town to come towards the very end of the campaign. Rowett’s potential arrival could be seen to repairing the damage that was left after John Eustace was controversially relieved of his duties and replaced by Wayne Rooney.
“Hopefully for Birmingham City’s stake, it will just help them steady the ship,” added the 57-year-old.
“They’ve got some massive games coming their way. They’ve got QPR, Huddersfield Town who are a place below them and Rotherham.
“They’ve got some massive games but they’ve got some winnable games. It’s important for them, they’re very ambitious, they’ve got American owners, they’ve come in to the building and made some poor choices.
I think we have to acknowledge that and I would imagine they would acknowledge that. They’re now trying to repair the damage.
