F1 Boss Issues Touching Statement Following Death of Pope Francis

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has paid an emotional tribute to Pope Francis, following the pontiff’s passing on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. The Vatican confirmed the Pope died peacefully in the early hours after suffering a stroke and heart failure, following a recent battle with double pneumonia.

Domenicali, a prominent figure in the motorsport world and former team principal at Ferrari, released a statement through Formula 1’s official channels, reflecting on his personal encounter with the late pope and honoring his legacy.

“I carry in my heart the touching memory of a gaze that transmitted peace; you could see from far away his extraordinary humanity and his spiritual strength,” Domenicali said. “Pope Francis was an authentic example of dialogue, kindness and mercy. He leaves behind a profound legacy that will remain with us all forever. We will miss his smile, so true and deep.”

Domenicali’s words echoed the sentiments of many within the racing community and beyond, as tributes poured in from around the world. Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, was the first Latin American pope and the first Jesuit to lead the Catholic Church. His 12-year papacy was marked by a commitment to humility, compassion, and social justice.

Throughout his time as pope, Francis maintained a deep connection with people of all walks of life, including those in the sports world. His messages of unity, respect, and peace were frequently acknowledged and appreciated by athletes and organizations alike.

Several Formula 1 figures joined Domenicali in honoring the pope’s memory. Franco Colapinto, an Argentine reserve driver for the Alpine team, posted on social media: “He was a leader who inspired us to be better people, not only in faith but in how we treat one another.”

Former Red Bull Racing driver Sergio Perez also expressed his condolences, noting Pope Francis’s role as a symbol of hope and strength for Latin America and beyond.

Francis’s death has deeply moved many around the globe. His papacy, which began in 2013, brought about significant reform and openness within the Church. Known for his modesty and emphasis on the needs of the poor and marginalized, Francis was a moral leader respected not only by Catholics but also by people from all faiths and backgrounds.

The Vatican has announced that funeral preparations are underway, with the service set for Saturday. Thousands of mourners are expected to gather in St. Peter’s Square to bid farewell to the beloved spiritual leader. The College of Cardinals will soon convene to begin the process of selecting the next pope.

As the world grieves the loss of Pope Francis, the heartfelt words from Stefano Domenicali and the wider F1 community stand as a testament to the broad and lasting influence of a man who, through faith and action, touched the hearts of millions.
