The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend will see a late adjustment to its schedule following the cancellation of a race earlier in the season. As the 2024 Formula 1 season reaches its finale at Yas Marina Circuit, numerous high-stakes battles remain unresolved.
Although Max Verstappen has already secured the drivers’ championship, the constructors’ title remains undecided, with McLaren and Ferrari set to clash in a final-day showdown. Meanwhile, competition further down the grid is equally intense, with Alpine, Haas, and VCARB locked in a tight battle for sixth place. Alpine currently holds a five-point advantage over Haas, bolstered by Pierre Gasly’s strong fifth-place finish in Qatar.
The weekend also marks the conclusion of the Formula 2 season and the F1 Academy, the all-female racing series. The F1 Academy’s schedule, however, has been revised due to the addition of an extra race. This adjustment follows the cancellation of a race in Qatar caused by significant barrier damage. The updated itinerary promises a packed weekend for the competitors.
According to an announcement on the F1 Academy’s official website, Free Practice and Qualifying sessions will take place on Friday at 09:50 and 18:35 local time (GMT+4), respectively. Saturday will feature two races: the first at 12:15 and the second under the lights at 20:15. The weekend’s action will conclude on Sunday morning with Race 3, starting at 11:15. Each race will run for 30 minutes plus one lap.
The grid positions for these races will be determined by drivers’ qualifying times. The fastest time will set the grid for Race 1, the second-fastest for Race 2, and the third-best time for Race 3. Additionally, two points will be awarded to the drivers who secure pole position on the final starting grid for each race.
Full championship points will be on offer across all three races, with winners earning 25 points and points awarded down to 10th place. Briton Abbi Pulling enters the finale as the 2024 F1 Academy champion, having dominated the season with seven victories across 11 races.
With excitement building across multiple series, the Abu Dhabi weekend is set to deliver a thrilling conclusion to the motorsport calendar. Fans can expect intense rivalries on both the F1 and F1 Academy grids as drivers and teams aim to end their campaigns on a high note.
