Alonso Slams FIA Over Leniency After Hamilton’s Monaco Outburst
Fernando Alonso has sharply criticized the FIA for what he describes as selective enforcement of rules following Lewis Hamilton’s emotional outburst over team radio during the Monaco Grand Prix. The seven-time world champion, frustrated with Mercedes’ race strategy and heavy traffic on the tight street circuit, unleashed a series of heated messages that were broadcast live to global audiences. While the radio chatter drew widespread reactions — ranging from empathy to condemnation — the FIA opted not to investigate or take any disciplinary action.
Alonso, currently racing for Aston Martin, voiced his disapproval after the race, suggesting that the FIA is failing to hold all drivers to the same standard. “There needs to be consistency in how the rules are applied,” he told reporters. “We all experience pressure during the race, but when a driver publicly lashes out, especially over the radio, it sets a bad example. If no action is taken, others may feel free to do the same.”
The two-time world champion was particularly critical of what he perceives as a double standard in how drivers are treated. He pointed out that drivers from less prominent teams or with lower profiles have faced penalties or reprimands for far less dramatic conduct, suggesting that Hamilton’s stature in the sport may have shielded him from punishment.
“Smaller teams and their drivers often face harsh scrutiny for even minor infractions. When someone at the top behaves in a way that breaches the code of conduct and there’s no consequence, it undermines the integrity of the sport,” Alonso said.
Alonso, who finished just outside the points in Monaco, emphasized that maintaining discipline on and off the track is essential not only for fair competition but also for the image of Formula 1 as a whole. He urged the FIA to review its stance on radio communications and emotional behavior, particularly when such moments are broadcast during live races and can influence public perception and younger fans.
The FIA has yet to issue an official response to Alonso’s comments. However, his remarks have reignited an ongoing debate within the Formula 1 community about the consistency and transparency of stewarding decisions. Critics argue that the lack of clear standards has led to confusion and frustration among teams and drivers alike.
As the 2025 season unfolds and the battle for championship points intensifies, pressure is mounting on the FIA to address these concerns. Many in the paddock are calling for clearer guidelines and more consistent application of penalties to ensure fairness, regardless of a driver’s status or team.
With the next Grand Prix just around the corner, all eyes will be on how the FIA responds — not only to Hamilton’s radio controversy but to growing concerns over race governance as a whole.
