Fernando Alonso Mourns the Loss of Long-Time Physiotherapist and Trusted Ally, Fabrizio Borra

Fernando Alonso, the two-time Formula 1 world champion, is grieving the loss of his long-standing physiotherapist and close companion, Fabrizio Borra, who sadly passed away on Sunday morning in Forlì, Italy, at the age of 64. Borra had been battling cancer privately for the past year, and his death has left a deep void not only in Alonso’s life but also in the wider Formula 1 community.

Borra wasn’t just a medical professional in Alonso’s corner—he was a deeply trusted figure who played an essential role in shaping the Spaniard’s racing career for more than two decades. Their professional relationship began in 2001 when Alonso made his F1 debut with Minardi. From that moment on, Borra remained a consistent and dedicated presence as Alonso transitioned through some of the sport’s biggest teams, including Renault, McLaren, Ferrari, Alpine, and most recently, Aston Martin.

Over the years, Borra became a crucial part of Alonso’s inner circle. In the physically demanding world of Formula 1, where strength, endurance, and reflexes are key to success, Borra’s guidance ensured Alonso maintained peak physical condition. He was instrumental not only in managing Alonso’s physical performance but also in providing emotional and psychological support. His role extended far beyond physiotherapy—he was a mentor, advisor, and trusted friend.

Highly respected in the world of sports medicine, Borra was widely considered one of Italy’s top physiotherapists. In addition to his long-standing partnership with Alonso, he also worked with other elite athletes, including seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher. His contribution to Schumacher’s stellar career further underscored his status as one of the finest in his field.

Borra’s approach to his work was a blend of scientific precision, disciplined practice, and a keen understanding of the physical and mental challenges athletes face. In a sport as intense as Formula 1—where drivers endure extreme temperatures, G-forces, and long races—Borra’s innovative techniques were often the difference between maintaining top form and risking performance dips or injury. Many in the sport credit him with helping redefine the standards of physical training in motorsport.

News of Borra’s passing was first reported by Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, prompting an outpouring of tributes from teams, drivers, and fans across the racing world. He was remembered not just for his professional accomplishments, but also for his warm character, deep empathy, and unwavering commitment to those he worked with.

For Alonso, Borra’s death is a deeply personal loss. Their bond extended well beyond the racetrack—through victories, challenges, injuries, and comebacks, Borra was always by his side. The loss of such a constant figure in his life and career is a heavy blow as Alonso continues his 2025 F1 campaign.

As Formula 1 moves forward with the upcoming races, Alonso and the entire paddock carry the memory of Borra with them. His legacy will endure through the lives he influenced, the champions he supported, and the high standards he set in the world of sport.
