Aston Martin Shake-Up: Andy Cowell Replaces Mike Krack as Team Principal
Aston Martin has announced a major leadership change ahead of the 2025 Formula 1 season, appointing Andy Cowell as team principal. Cowell, who joined the team as CEO in July 2024, takes over from Mike Krack, who has been reassigned to a newly created role as chief trackside officer.
This reshuffle comes as part of Aston Martin’s long-term strategy to position themselves as championship contenders. Cowell, formerly a key figure at Mercedes, only began his operational duties with the Silverstone-based team in October. In his new role, he aims to accelerate the team’s progress towards becoming a dominant force in F1.
Speaking on the development, Cowell expressed his admiration for the team’s dedication and hard work during his initial months with Aston Martin. He also emphasized the significance of upcoming milestones, including the completion of the AMR Technology Campus and the team’s transition to a full works partnership with Honda and Aramco in 2026. “These changes are a natural progression in our multi-year plan to achieve championship-winning success,” Cowell said.
Mike Krack, who joined the team in 2022, will remain a crucial part of the operation despite stepping down as team principal. His new position as chief trackside officer will see him focus on race weekend performance and operational execution. Additionally, the team has made other structural adjustments, including the recruitment of former Ferrari engineer Enrico Cardile as chief technical officer. Meanwhile, Tom McCullough retains a key leadership role, although specific details of his position have not been disclosed.
The decision to restructure leadership comes after a challenging 2024 season. Aston Martin began 2023 as one of the strongest teams on the grid, often challenging for podiums and, at times, holding the second-fastest car. However, a steep decline in performance saw them battling with Sauber and Williams at the lower end of the field by the end of last year.
Team owner Lawrence Stroll is determined to reverse this downward trajectory and establish Aston Martin as a frontrunner in F1. The reshuffle is seen as a proactive measure to strengthen the team’s foundations as they prepare for their partnership with Honda and strive for a brighter future.
With Cowell at the helm and significant structural changes in place, Aston Martin hopes to rekindle the promise they showed in 2023 and emerge as a serious championship contender.
