Aston Martin Confirm Historic Driver Signing with Launch of New Academy
Aston Martin have taken a bold step into the future of Formula 1 by announcing the formation of their first-ever official driver academy – with 21-year-old Spanish talent Mari Boya unveiled as its inaugural member.
The landmark announcement marks a historic moment for the Silverstone-based team, as they look to ensure long-term competitiveness by developing their own pool of young drivers – mirroring the approach taken by elite outfits like Ferrari, Red Bull, and McLaren.
Boya, currently competing in the FIA Formula 3 Championship with Campos Racing, has impressed throughout his junior career. After a standout karting run and a successful stint in the Formula Regional European Championship, the young Spaniard secured his first F3 victory last year. His recent podium in Monaco further solidified his credentials, prompting Aston Martin to move quickly to secure his signature.
Boya: “A Dream Come True”
Speaking after his signing, Boya said:
“Joining the Aston Martin Aramco Formula 1 Team driver academy is a dream come true. It’s a unique opportunity to learn from a team with so much ambition in Formula 1. My goal is to absorb as much knowledge as possible, contribute in every way I can, and continue showing my potential on track.”
“Being part of such a prestigious team and stepping into the Aston Martin Aramco environment is incredibly special. The AMR Technology Campus is an inspiring place, and having role models like Fernando Alonso, Lance Stroll, and Pedro de la Rosa makes this journey even more meaningful.”
Cowell: “We Are Building for the Future”
Aston Martin Team Principal Andy Cowell welcomed Boya to the new programme while highlighting the broader goal of the initiative.
“Firstly, we are very happy to welcome Mari to the new programme. He is a promising talent with a strong track record, natural speed, and a determined mindset,” Cowell said.
“Our aim is to support his development in every area – from racecraft and technical feedback to media, fitness, and personal growth – preparing him for the demands of top-level racing.”
“The launch of the Aston Martin Aramco Formula 1 Team driver academy represents our commitment to shaping the next generation of drivers. It’s about nurturing excellence on and off the track and ensuring we have future stars ready to step up when needed.”
With both Fernando Alonso (43) and Lance Stroll currently contracted until the end of the 2026 season, questions remain over Aston Martin’s long-term F1 driver lineup. Despite having 2022 F2 champion Felipe Drugovich as their reserve, the team has yet to hand him a full-time F1 seat – and at 25, time may not be on his side.
The new academy could now prove vital to Aston Martin’s long-term strategy. As F1 becomes more competitive and talent-driven, ensuring a steady stream of prepared and high-performing young drivers may be key to the team’s rise to the top tier.
For now, all eyes will be on Mari Boya as he continues to chase success in F3 and begins his journey under the Aston Martin banner – with the ultimate goal of making it to the Formula 1 grid.
