Lance Stroll Withdraws from Spanish Grand Prix Due to Ongoing Wrist Pain
Aston Martin has confirmed that Canadian Formula 1 driver Lance Stroll will not take part in Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix, citing persistent medical concerns related to his wrist. The decision comes after Stroll reported escalating discomfort, prompting the team and medical experts to withdraw him from competition for further treatment.
Stroll, who qualified 14th, has been racing through pain for several weeks, believed to be a result of complications from wrist surgery he underwent ahead of the 2023 F1 season. That procedure followed a cycling accident in February 2023 which left him with multiple injuries, including fractured wrists, and forced him to miss pre-season testing.
“Over the course of the past six weeks, Lance has been experiencing pain in his hand and wrist, which his medical consultant believes is in relation to the procedure he underwent in 2023,” Aston Martin said in an official statement. “As a result, his medical team have confirmed that he will not race tomorrow and he will undergo a procedure to rectify these issues before focusing on his recovery.”
Despite his ongoing discomfort, Stroll has managed to compete in every race since his 2023 comeback — until now. Medical advice has now mandated further intervention and a period of recovery, ruling him out of this weekend’s race.
Notably, Aston Martin has opted not to field a replacement, meaning the team will run only one car during the Grand Prix. F1 regulations stipulate that a driver must participate in qualifying to race, and no substitute was named prior to Saturday’s session.
Stroll’s absence is a setback for the British team, which has relied heavily on the 25-year-old this season. He has contributed all 14 of Aston Martin’s championship points in 2025, underscoring his critical role in the team’s campaign.
Aston Martin has not disclosed a timeline for Stroll’s return but affirmed that his health and recovery will take precedence. Fans and the paddock alike will be hoping for a swift return for the young driver as the season continues.
