Lance Stroll Withdraws from Spanish Grand Prix Due to Ongoing Wrist Issues
Aston Martin has confirmed that Lance Stroll will not take part in the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix, citing medical reasons related to persistent pain in his wrist and hand. The Canadian driver, who had qualified 14th for Sunday’s race in Barcelona, has been struggling with increasing discomfort in recent weeks, prompting the team and his doctors to make the difficult call to sideline him for the event.
In an official statement released ahead of the race weekend, Aston Martin revealed that Stroll’s condition appears to be tied to a previous surgical procedure he underwent before the start of the 2023 Formula 1 season. Team doctors and specialists have linked the resurgence of pain to complications stemming from that earlier surgery, which was conducted after Stroll suffered multiple injuries in a cycling accident in early 2023.
The February 2023 incident occurred just before pre-season testing and resulted in Stroll fracturing both wrists. The crash forced him to miss out on the crucial testing period, but he made an unexpectedly rapid recovery, returning in time for the season opener in Bahrain. Since then, he has competed in every race without fail — until now.
However, over the past six weeks, the discomfort has become increasingly unmanageable. Despite pushing through the pain, the decision was ultimately made in the interest of Stroll’s long-term health. He is now set to undergo a new medical procedure aimed at addressing the lingering complications in his wrist. His medical team has recommended a period of rest and rehabilitation, ruling him out of the Spanish Grand Prix entirely.
“Lance has been dealing with pain in his hand and wrist over the last month and a half, which is believed to be related to the surgery he had before the 2023 season,” the team said in a press release. “Following medical advice, he will not be racing in Spain and will undergo a procedure to address the issue before beginning a recovery period.”
Notably, Aston Martin will not be fielding a replacement driver for the race in Barcelona. Per Formula 1 regulations, any driver intending to race must participate in at least one qualifying session. With no reserve driver taking part in Saturday’s qualifying, the team is left with just one car on the grid — Fernando Alonso’s — for Sunday’s race.
Stroll’s absence is a significant setback for Aston Martin. The 25-year-old has been the team’s sole point-scorer this season, contributing all 14 points to their constructor standings tally. Without his presence, Aston Martin faces an uphill battle in maintaining their competitiveness in the tightly contested midfield.
The team has not given a firm timeline for Stroll’s return but emphasized that his full recovery is the top priority. Supporters and teammates alike are hoping for a swift and complete recovery, with the aim of seeing him back behind the wheel as soon as he’s medically cleared.
