Aston Martin to Sell Minority Stake in F1 Team as Stroll Increases Investment
Aston Martin has decided to offload its minority stake in the Aston Martin Formula 1 team in an effort to improve its financial standing. The luxury car manufacturer will sell its £74 million investment to the team’s current ownership group, led by billionaire Lawrence Stroll. In addition to the purchase, Stroll will inject a further £52.5 million into the team.
Despite the ownership change, the team will continue to race under the Aston Martin name due to a long-term sponsorship and licensing deal that remains unaffected by the sale. This ensures that the iconic British racing green colors and the Aston Martin brand will remain a fixture in Formula 1 for years to come.
Stroll’s investment consortium, Yew Tree, has now funneled approximately £600 million into the Silverstone-based team since it was rebranded from Racing Point in 2020. The Canadian businessman originally acquired the struggling Force India team in 2018, renaming it Racing Point before securing Aston Martin’s backing and rebranding once again in 2021.
While the long-term future of the team appears stable, the 2025 season is expected to be a transitional period as Aston Martin prepares for the major regulatory changes coming in 2026. Currently, the team sits seventh in the Formula 1 world championship standings after two races, with performance struggles evident. However, engineering legend Adrian Newey, widely regarded as one of the sport’s greatest minds, is playing a key role in the team’s development ahead of the new regulations.
So far this season, all ten of Aston Martin’s points have been scored by Lance Stroll, the team owner’s son. Meanwhile, veteran driver Fernando Alonso has endured a tough start, failing to finish either of the first two races of the campaign. As the team heads into this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix, they hope for a turnaround in fortunes.
In an official statement, Lawrence Stroll emphasized the team’s stability and long-term commitment to Formula 1, stating: “These moves demonstrate that Aston Martin’s place on the Formula 1 grid is as secure as ever. Aston Martin Lagonda recently re-committed to its long-term sponsorship and licensing agreement with Aston Martin F1, confirming that the legendary Aston Martin brand and its British racing green colors will compete in Formula 1 for decades to come.”
The sale marks another strategic shift in Aston Martin’s motorsport involvement while allowing the F1 team to continue its ambitious plans under Stroll’s leadership. With substantial financial backing and an eye on future success, the team aims to establish itself as a leading force on the grid in the coming years.
