Bernie Ecclestone Criticizes Hamilton’s Move to Ferrari: “He Won’t Last Two Years in Maranello”

In a recent interview, former Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone unleashed a series of sharp remarks directed at seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. The outspoken 94-year-old, who played a pivotal role in shaping the modern Formula 1 landscape, did not hold back in his critique of Hamilton, particularly regarding his highly anticipated move to Ferrari. Ecclestone’s comments have sparked debate in the F1 world, with fans and analysts alike weighing in on the harsh judgment.

Ecclestone, who has never been one to shy away from controversy, began by addressing Hamilton’s driving talent, a subject that often brings praise from others in the sport. “He’s got a lot of talent as a driver,” Ecclestone conceded, but quickly added a cutting qualifier. “Not in the amount that people give him credit for, but it’s enough to win races.” These words stand in stark contrast to the widespread admiration Hamilton has garnered throughout his illustrious career. With 103 career wins and seven world championships, many regard him as one of the greatest drivers in F1 history, if not the greatest.

However, Ecclestone was not convinced that Hamilton’s accolades reflect his actual ability. “He’s won because he’s had the best car,” Ecclestone suggested, referencing Hamilton’s dominance during his time with Mercedes, where he secured six of his seven world titles. This sentiment has been echoed by some critics who argue that Hamilton’s success was largely due to the strength of his machinery rather than his individual skill.

Perhaps the most stinging part of Ecclestone’s remarks came when he predicted that Hamilton’s stint at Ferrari would be short-lived. “Hamilton will not last two years in Maranello,” he boldly claimed. This prediction casts doubt over the Briton’s ability to adapt to the pressures and unique challenges of driving for Ferrari, a team known for its intense scrutiny and passionate fanbase. Ferrari, despite being the most storied and successful team in F1 history, has struggled to recapture its championship-winning form in recent years. Ecclestone implied that Hamilton may not be the right fit to help return the team to glory.

The former F1 chief also made a personal dig at Hamilton’s fashion choices, an aspect of the driver’s personality that has often drawn attention. “How can a guy who has won a few world titles and has a few dollars in the bank dress the way he does?” Ecclestone quipped, adding, “I’m not a fan of that.” Hamilton, who has become a global fashion icon and regularly attends high-profile events, is known for his bold and unconventional style, something that has set him apart from other drivers. While his fashion sense has earned him praise from the wider entertainment industry, it appears to have failed to impress Ecclestone, who has long been critical of drivers stepping outside the traditional image of an F1 racer.

Hamilton, for his part, has always brushed off criticism of his fashion choices, insisting that his style is simply an expression of his personality. In the past, he has spoken about his desire to break the mold and push boundaries, both in the sport and in his personal life. While some, like Ecclestone, may disapprove of his off-track persona, Hamilton’s influence has undoubtedly helped bring F1 into the mainstream, reaching audiences beyond the traditional motorsport fanbase.

As Hamilton prepares to begin his first season with Ferrari in 2025, there is no doubt that the pressure will be on to perform. His partnership with Charles Leclerc is one of the most highly anticipated driver pairings in recent years, and fans are eager to see if he can bring Ferrari back to the top. While Ecclestone’s criticism may have cast a shadow over his move, Hamilton has proven time and again that he thrives under pressure and enjoys defying expectations.

As the new season approaches, only time will tell whether Ecclestone’s prediction about Hamilton’s future at Ferrari will come true. For now, the world will be watching to see if Hamilton can silence his doubters and add to his legacy with the iconic Scuderia.
