BREAKING: Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi Co….read more.
Legendary Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi has opened up about his long-standing difficulties with certain guitars, admitting that some just never suited his playing style. In a recent interview, the 76-year-old rock icon revealed that despite decades of experience and innovation, there are still guitars he avoids simply because he can’t play them properly.
Iommi, best known for shaping the heavy metal genre with his dark riffs and iconic tone, explained that while he’s always been open to trying new gear, not every guitar has felt right in his hands. “I don’t use them,” he said candidly. “There are a few guitars I’ve tried over the years that just didn’t work for me. I couldn’t get comfortable or get the sound I wanted. I couldn’t play them the way I wanted to.”
Among the models he mentioned were certain Fenders and other popular brands that many rock legends swear by. However, Iommi stressed that it wasn’t about the quality of the instruments — it was simply a matter of personal feel and musical chemistry. “It’s not the guitar’s fault,” he added. “Some just don’t suit my style or the way I play.”
Iommi has long favored Gibson SG guitars, which have become synonymous with his sound. He even has a signature model that reflects his unique setup and playing needs, especially after losing the tips of two fingers in an industrial accident early in his career.
Despite his technical limitations, Iommi’s innovative approach and persistence helped him overcome challenges and redefine what heavy metal guitar could be. His honesty about his limitations only adds to his legacy as one of rock’s most influential and relatable figures.
