Carlos Sainz explains why Ferrari chose to replace him with Lewis Hamilton
Carlos Sainz is set to compete in his final race with Ferrari at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix before being replaced by Lewis Hamilton for the 2025 Formula 1 season.
The Spaniard, who was informed of Ferrari’s decision during the winter break, has faced months of speculation about his future before ultimately signing with Williams after being persuaded by team principal James Vowles.
Sainz’s 2024 season demonstrated his value as one of the grid’s most competitive drivers.
Notable performances included a remarkable victory in Australia shortly after recovering from appendicitis and another dominant win in Mexico.
His triumph in Singapore was particularly significant, as it marked the only race Red Bull failed to win in 2023.
These results have fueled questions about Ferrari’s decision to part ways with him.
Speaking on the Beyond the Grid podcast, Sainz explained that he completely understands Ferrari’s choice to bring in Hamilton, a seven-time world champion.
He acknowledged the historical significance of Hamilton joining Ferrari for the final chapter of his illustrious career and accepted that such a move would require a reshuffle within the team.
Sainz noted that Charles Leclerc, considered Ferrari’s long-term project since his junior days, was unlikely to be replaced, leaving him as the more expendable option.
Sainz admitted he would have struggled more to accept the decision if the replacement had been someone other than Hamilton.
He expressed respect for Hamilton’s legacy and understood why Ferrari made the decision despite his own strong performances.
Although Sainz outscored Hamilton in the 2024 Drivers’ standings, with Hamilton struggling in an underperforming Mercedes car, the Spaniard faced challenges against teammate Leclerc.
Leclerc has consistently edged Sainz in qualifying battles over their time together, maintaining a clear advantage, including a 15-7 record in 2024.
Sainz’s move to Williams signals a new chapter in his career, and he is determined to prove Ferrari wrong by excelling with his new team.
His performances in 2024 solidified his reputation as one of the grid’s most reliable and competitive drivers, even as he departs Ferrari.
Meanwhile, Ferrari looks ahead to welcoming Hamilton, hoping the veteran driver can help them reclaim championship glory alongside Leclerc.
