BREAKING: Christian Horner Reveals FIA’s Proposal Ahead of…read more
Red Bull team boss Christian Horner has revealed that the FIA has proposed a key adjustment to battery usage as part of the discussions surrounding Formula 1’s major regulation overhaul set for 2026.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Horner confirmed that the FIA recently suggested reducing battery energy deployment during races—an idea aimed at addressing concerns over drivability and race dynamics without altering the core technical specifications of the new power units.
“They’ve finally taken a proper look at the regulations and noticed that next year, there could be a huge amount of lift and coast during races,” Horner explained. “That’s going to frustrate drivers.”
He also warned that under the current plans, the DRS (Drag Reduction System) could remain open for extended periods, which would significantly reduce its effectiveness in enabling overtakes. The FIA’s proposal, he said, would help counteract that by introducing a push-to-pass style element, maintaining the excitement of on-track battles.
The 2026 rules, unveiled in mid-2023, include a greater emphasis on electric power and fully sustainable fuels, signaling a shift toward more environmentally conscious racing. However, the path to implementation has been far from smooth.
Earlier this year, FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem pitched the idea of returning to V10 engines during a high-level meeting in Bahrain—a suggestion that was swiftly dismissed by manufacturers committed to the previously agreed hybrid future.
Despite the pushback, regulatory refinements continue. According to Horner, the latest FIA proposal aims to ensure that performance, sustainability, and race spectacle are all kept in balance as the sport moves into a new era.
“There’s still a lot of discussion about what the future F1 engine should be,” Horner said. “But right now, it’s also about fine-tuning what we already have.”
