Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner has set high expectations for Lewis Hamilton’s upcoming move to Ferrari in 2025.
The seven-time world champion, who has spent over a decade with Mercedes, will be joining the Maranello-based team after a challenging final season with his current team.
Hamilton, often regarded as one of the greatest drivers in Formula 1, has achieved more than 100 race wins and 200 podiums, and his time with Mercedes has contributed to their unprecedented success, including eight consecutive constructors’ titles.
While Horner and Hamilton have long been competitors, especially during Hamilton’s dominant years with Mercedes, Horner still holds significant respect for the British driver’s skill. He believes that Hamilton’s move to Ferrari could position him as an immediate contender for wins.
With Ferrari showing improvement throughout the season, Horner sees a combination of Hamilton’s talent and Ferrari’s momentum as potentially formidable.
Speaking to GP Blog, he commented on Ferrari’s progress and Hamilton’s capabilities, acknowledging that “a driver of Lewis’s quality is always going to be a challenger.”
He also noted that Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc is a highly skilled driver and expects both Hamilton and Leclerc to add strength to Ferrari’s lineup in the coming season.
Hamilton has not had the smoothest final season with Mercedes, as the 39-year-old has faced ongoing struggles with car performance and consistency.
With only a few races left this season, he aims to make the most of his remaining time with Mercedes before moving to Ferrari.
However, Hamilton has already shown admiration for Ferrari’s recent achievements, particularly their strong results in races like the United States and Mexico Grands Prix.
Ferrari’s improvements, including five wins and 18 podium finishes this season, have elevated them to second place in the constructors’ standings, only behind McLaren.
Looking ahead, Hamilton has shared his interest in Ferrari’s development and innovation, noting that he is closely following how other teams, like Ferrari, Red Bull, and McLaren, continue to enhance their cars.
Speaking to Motorsport, Hamilton admitted that it has been interesting to see Ferrari’s advancements, especially given Red Bull’s earlier dominance and McLaren’s rise in competitiveness.
Ferrari’s ongoing performance improvements have made Hamilton even more optimistic about the potential for a strong 2025 season with the team.
As the 2024 season nears its end, the championship battle remains close, with Ferrari and McLaren leading the competition and Red Bull currently in third.
Red Bull’s season has been inconsistent, leading to a three-way championship race heading into the final events, including the upcoming Las Vegas Grand Prix.
Fans are anticipating a dramatic conclusion to this season, while Hamilton’s future move to Ferrari is already sparking intrigue about how the championship dynamics might shift in 2025.
