Germany suffered a setback ahead of their World Cup semifinal against Italy as FIFA suspended midfielder Torsten Frings for one match following his involvement in a post-match altercation after Friday’s victory over Argentina.

Video footage showed Frings striking Argentine forward Julio Cruz. Initially, FIFA indicated no action would be taken against the German players but reversed this decision on Sunday, launching an investigation into Frings’s role in the incident that occurred after Germany’s 4-2 win in a penalty shootout.

Frings maintained his innocence, and Julio Cruz was quoted in the Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport denying that he was punched, with German television footage showing Frings making minimal contact with Cruz using his fist.

Despite Frings being provoked by Argentine players, FIFA’s disciplinary committee determined his actions constituted “an assault.” Should Germany reach the final, Frings will be eligible to play.
