F1 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix starting grid with penalties applied

The 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix starting grid is finalized, with George Russell securing a brilliant pole position for Mercedes.

Russell delivered a stunning lap time of 1:32:312 during a fiercely contested qualifying session on the iconic street circuit, narrowly beating Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, who will start from second on the grid.

This pole position marks a significant achievement for Russell, who outperformed strong competitors to lead the race lineup.

Sainz, in second, showed excellent form in his Ferrari, positioning himself well for a competitive outing in Nevada.

Mercedes had mixed fortunes in qualifying, with Russell’s teammate, Lewis Hamilton, ending up disappointed.

Despite topping the timesheets in Free Practice 1 and 2, Hamilton struggled during qualifying and will start the race in 10th.

The seven-time world champion’s pace earlier in the weekend hinted at potential success, but he couldn’t capitalize when it mattered most.

Behind the front row, Alpine’s Pierre Gasly emerged as one of the surprise stars of the session, claiming an impressive third position.

Gasly’s performance highlights Alpine’s strong potential in Las Vegas, as his teammate Esteban Ocon also showed flashes of competitiveness further down the order.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc will line up alongside Gasly in fourth, ensuring both Ferraris are well-placed to challenge for strong results.

Championship contenders Max Verstappen and Lando Norris will start from fifth and sixth, respectively.

Verstappen, who has been dominant throughout much of the season, faced stiff competition and couldn’t break into the top four.

His Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez, however, endured another challenging session, qualifying down in 16th after being eliminated in Q1 for the sixth time this year.

Norris, driving for McLaren, demonstrated solid pace to secure sixth, maintaining his status as a consistent frontrunner.

Further down the grid, Yuki Tsunoda delivered a strong performance for VCARB Racing, securing seventh place.

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri qualified eighth, showcasing the team’s consistent competitiveness.

Nico Hulkenberg put Haas into the top 10 with a ninth-place finish, completing a commendable effort in qualifying.

Esteban Ocon will begin the race from 11th, followed by Haas’ Kevin Magnussen in 12th. Zhou Guanyu placed 13th for Kick Sauber, ahead of Franco Colapinto, who achieved 14th in his Williams. Liam Lawson, driving for VCARB, rounds out the top 15.

The bottom end of the grid sees Perez in 16th, Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll in 17th and 19th, respectively, with Alex Albon’s Williams sandwiched between them in 18th.

Valtteri Bottas, representing Kick Sauber, will start from the back of the grid in 20th due to penalties.

As the race approaches, all eyes will be on the front-row battle between Russell and Sainz, while the midfield promises plenty of action.

With key championship contenders starting from various positions, the Las Vegas Grand Prix is set to deliver a thrilling spectacle under the lights.
