McLaren Secures Front Row as Piastri Takes Pole for Spanish GP
The starting lineup is locked in for the 2025 Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix following a thrilling qualifying session at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. As the ninth round of the championship, the pressure is intensifying—and McLaren has made a huge statement by securing a front-row lockout.
Oscar Piastri will lead the field from pole position after a brilliant performance in qualifying. The young Australian, who has been one of the standout drivers this season, added another impressive achievement to his campaign. He’s looking to claim his first Spanish Grand Prix victory and strengthen his championship lead. With history on his side—24 of the last 34 races at this track have been won from pole—Piastri will be confident heading into Sunday’s race.
Lining up beside him is his McLaren teammate Lando Norris. The British driver secured second on the grid, completing McLaren’s first front-row lockout of the season. With both drivers starting up front, McLaren is in prime position to score big and tighten the race in the Constructors’ Championship.
Behind the McLarens, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen will start from third. The reigning world champion has enjoyed past success in Barcelona but will need a strong start to challenge the McLarens. Mercedes’ George Russell impressed with a fourth-place qualifying effort, showing a strong bounce-back after a tough outing in Monaco.
Lewis Hamilton will begin the race from fifth for Ferrari, having outqualified teammate Charles Leclerc for just the second time this year. Leclerc will start seventh, split by Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli in sixth, who continues to prove himself in his debut season.
Pierre Gasly secured eighth in the Alpine, ahead of Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar in ninth. The young Frenchman continues to show promise in his rookie campaign. Rounding out the top ten is veteran Fernando Alonso, who will be racing in front of his home crowd for Aston Martin.
Alex Albon just missed out on a top-ten spot and will start 11th in the Williams, ahead of Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto and Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson. Lance Stroll will begin 14th for Aston Martin, followed by Ollie Bearman (Haas), Nico Hulkenberg (Sauber), and Esteban Ocon (Haas).
Carlos Sainz had a difficult session and will start all the way back in 18th in the second Williams. Alpine rookie Franco Colapinto and Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda round out the grid in 19th and 20th, respectively.
