BREAKING: F1 CEO Backs Potential Ferrari Move for Rising Star Kimi Antonelli as…read more
Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has thrown his support behind the idea of Kimi Antonelli joining Ferrari in the future, praising the young Italian’s early performances and potential
Antonelli, currently driving for Mercedes in his rookie season, has impressed with consistent points finishes in three of the first four races of 2025. As the only Italian on the current grid and the first full-time Italian driver since Antonio Giovinazzi in 2021, he naturally draws attention as a possible future star for Ferrari.
In an interview with Radio Rai Gr Parlamento, Domenicali said:
“An Italian driver in an Italian car? That would be something special. In today’s world, we need drivers who can inspire the next generation. It would be great to see, although I doubt Toto Wolff would be on board just yet.”
Domenicali’s comments echo those of former Ferrari president Luca Di Montezemolo, who recently suggested Antonelli would be a perfect fit for Ferrari’s future plans.
Despite his Italian roots, Antonelli has risen through the ranks under the Mercedes junior program. Skipping Formula 3, he made the leap directly to F2 in 2024, where he finished sixth overall enough to convince Mercedes he was ready to replace Lewis Hamilton, who made a sensational move to Ferrari.
Although still trailing his experienced teammate George Russell who is currently fighting for the title Antonelli’s maturity and speed have made a strong impression.
“We need to give him time,” Domenicali continued. “He’s a special young man. Seeing him walk into the paddock with his family gives a touching, human side to the sport. But when the helmet goes on, he’s incredibly quick.
“It’s too soon to compare him to the greats, but one thing’s for sure he’s destined to play a major role in Formula 1.”
As Ferrari plans for life beyond Hamilton and Leclerc, Antonelli’s name is increasingly being mentioned as a future star for the Scuderia though convincing Mercedes to part with their prized talent may prove a challenge.
