F1 champ survives CLOSE ENCOUNTER with animal at Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix witnessed an unexpected interruption during FP3 when Fernando Alonso narrowly avoided a collision with a bird that swooped onto the track.
The 43-year-old Aston Martin driver was on a flying lap when the large bird appeared, forcing him to swerve to avoid an accident. Thankfully, both Alonso and the bird escaped unharmed.
This is not the first time wildlife has disrupted a Formula 1 session.
Earlier this season, Max Verstappen faced a near miss with a groundhog at the Canadian Grand Prix, which he claimed almost cost him the victory.
Similarly, the Singapore Grand Prix FP3 session in September was halted when a lizard roamed the track, with Fernando Alonso humorously referencing “Larry the Lizard” from a prior incident.
Alonso ended the final practice session of the 2024 season in P15, ahead of his teammate Lance Stroll, who finished P18.
Frustrations have been mounting for the two-time world champion, who called his car the “worst ever” during a heated outburst on Friday.
Aston Martin’s struggles have been evident throughout the season, as the team failed to compete with the top four constructors and is set to finish fifth in the standings.
The Silverstone-based team has endured a lackluster 2024 campaign, falling short of the strong performances expected earlier in the season.
However, there is hope for a turnaround in 2025 with the anticipated arrival of renowned designer Adrian Newey, whose expertise could help propel the team back into contention at the front of the grid.
