Fernando Alonso, the two-time Formula 1 world champion, recently addressed concerns about his health following a difficult 2024 season with Aston Martin. After a successful 2023 campaign, where Alonso secured multiple podium finishes, the 2024 season has been challenging, with the Spaniard failing to reach the podium at any race. Aston Martin also struggled in the Constructors’ Championship, finishing fifth, well behind the leading teams. Despite these setbacks, Alonso managed to finish ninth in the Drivers’ Championship, securing the highest position outside of the top four teams.
Alonso, however, revealed that his struggles in 2024 were not solely due to performance issues. The physical challenges he faced were partly due to the porpoising problem with the Aston Martin car, which caused excessive bouncing and instability. This issue led to physical injuries, particularly in his shoulder. Alonso explained that driving cars from other teams like McLaren, Ferrari, or Mercedes, which did not have the same handling problems, was less physically demanding. Following the Brazilian Grand Prix, Alonso raced through the next four events while enduring significant shoulder pain, relying on painkillers to manage the discomfort.
At 43 years old, Alonso faced speculation regarding his age and fitness, but he was quick to dismiss any suggestions that his physical struggles were related to growing older. He emphasized that the issues were directly linked to the car’s performance rather than his personal health. Known for his resilience and competitive nature, Alonso humorously pointed out that he felt in better shape than many of his peers, despite his shoulder troubles.
Looking ahead, Alonso remains optimistic about the future. Aston Martin is set to make significant improvements to their car, including the addition of renowned engineer Adrian Newey, which could help the team close the gap to the top four. Despite the challenges of the 2024 season, Alonso’s focus remains firmly on the upcoming seasons, and he remains confident in his ability to perform at the highest level. His determination and refusal to let physical setbacks hinder his progress serve as a testament to his enduring competitive spirit and resilience in the face of adversity.
