F1 champion Lando Norris DEMOTED to pit-lane start following…read more
Defending Formula One champion Lando Norris will not begin the race from the main grid at the Chinese Grand Prix after his team, McLaren, encountered a technical problem with his car prior to the race. As a result, Norris has been moved to a pit-lane start, meaning he will join the race after the rest of the field has already taken off from the starting grid.
This development leaves McLaren in an unusual situation, as only one of their cars will line up on the official starting grid for the race. It marks the second consecutive race weekend where the team has been unable to field both drivers on the grid at the start.
Despite the setback, there is still a possibility that Norris could participate in the race itself. Reports indicate that the issue affecting his car is related to the vehicle’s electrical systems rather than any major structural damage. Because of this, the team still has a chance to repair the problem before the race gets underway, allowing him to leave the pit lane once the race has begun.
The situation contrasts sharply with what happened to his teammate Oscar Piastri during the season opener at the Australian Grand Prix. In that race, Piastri’s car suffered significant physical damage after contact with the wall, which left parts of the car compromised and ultimately prevented him from taking his place on the grid. The issue in Norris’s case is considered less severe because it is a mechanical and electrical fault rather than crash damage.
Formula One analyst Bernie Collins, speaking during coverage on Sky Sports, explained that regardless of how quickly the team resolves the problem, the rules mean Norris will still have to begin the race from the pit lane. According to Collins, once a car undergoes certain changes or fails to reach the grid in time due to technical difficulties, a pit-lane start becomes mandatory under the regulations.
While a pit-lane start is far from ideal, it does not necessarily eliminate Norris from contention entirely. Drivers starting from the pit lane can still work their way through the field if their car has strong pace and the race strategy plays in their favor. However, it does present a significant challenge, as Norris will effectively begin the race behind every other driver.
For McLaren, the situation adds pressure during what has already been a difficult start to the season. Having only one car on the grid again reduces their chances of scoring maximum points and puts more responsibility on their remaining grid starter to deliver a strong performance.
Fans will now be watching closely to see whether Norris can overcome the disadvantage of starting from the pit lane and salvage a competitive result at the Chinese Grand Prix.
