F1 Drivers at Risk of Race BANS as FIA L…read more

For the 2025 Formula 1 season, the FIA has implemented stricter disciplinary regulations that could lead to drivers facing race bans more readily than in previous years. These changes come as part of a significant overhaul to the FIA’s International Sporting Code, with the aim of tightening the definitions and consequences of what is deemed inappropriate or unprofessional conduct, both on and off the track.

Under these updated rules, the scope of what constitutes “misconduct” and “offensive acts” has been broadened. This includes a wide range of behaviors — not just during racing events, but also in public and media appearances. Drivers who engage in acts considered disrespectful or inappropriate, such as using profanity during interviews, making derogatory comments about FIA officials, or showing a lack of respect at official events, now face much stiffer penalties than before.

Penalties for such behavior have been significantly increased. Offending drivers may now be subject to monetary fines ranging between €40,000 and €120,000. But the consequences don’t stop at financial punishment. In more serious cases, drivers can be suspended from future races or even stripped of valuable championship points — penalties that could have a major impact on the title race or team standings over the course of a season.

The FIA’s move has generated a wave of concern and criticism from both drivers and fans. Many see the new measures as overly harsh and potentially stifling to driver personality and freedom of expression. Critics argue that the expanded definition of misconduct is too vague, leaving too much room for interpretation and subjective enforcement. There are fears that these rules could be used selectively, which might affect the fairness of their application across different drivers and teams.

Supporters of the changes, however, argue that they are necessary to preserve the integrity and professionalism of the sport. They point to past instances where drivers’ behavior during interviews or on social media has been viewed as controversial or damaging to the image of Formula 1. The FIA maintains that these new measures are intended to ensure that the sport maintains high standards of conduct and mutual respect among its participants.

In essence, Formula 1 drivers will need to be far more cautious about their behavior starting in 2025. Whether in a press conference, post-race interview, or public appearance, their words and actions could now carry heavier consequences. With the potential for fines, point deductions, and race suspensions, these new rules are set to reshape the boundaries of acceptable conduct in the sport.
