F1 Drivers Face Double Penalty Risk After FIA Rule Change for Monaco Grand Prix
Formula 1 drivers are under increased pressure ahead of this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix after the FIA introduced a pair of significant rule changes that could lead to double penalties.
As F1 returns to the iconic Monte Carlo streets for the 82nd running of the race, the sport’s governing body has mandated a minimum of two pit stops for all drivers. The new rule aims to add unpredictability and excitement to a race that has often been decided in qualifying, due to the circuit’s tight layout and limited overtaking opportunities.
In addition, the FIA has lowered the pit lane speed limit to 60 km/h, down from the usual 80 km/h, citing safety concerns. This change is similar to the adjustment made earlier this season at Albert Park in Australia, another track with a narrow pit lane.
Together, these changes present drivers with twice the chance of receiving penalties — one for each pit stop — particularly for speeding in the pit lane. Even small infractions can result in fines or time penalties. Last year, Lance Stroll exceeded the limit by just 0.2 km/h in Monaco and was fined €100, while Valtteri Bottas was fined €1,000 for going over by 14.6 km/h.
While all F1 cars are equipped with pit speed limiters, the system must be manually activated, and several drivers have already been penalized this season for failing to do so properly. The FIA’s decision means teams and drivers must be extra vigilant to avoid mistakes that could cost them valuable positions or points.
With strategy now playing an even greater role and the margin for error slimmer than ever, Sunday’s race promises more drama — both on and off the track.
