F1 Fans Slam Nico Rosberg for Sparking Ferrari’s ‘Curse’ at Monza

Nico Rosberg found himself at the center of controversy during the Italian Grand Prix weekend, as frustrated Ferrari supporters accused him of triggering the so-called “Rosberg curse.” The former Mercedes driver, now a pundit with Sky Sports, unknowingly set social media alight after posting what seemed like an innocent photo from Monza.

On Sunday, the 2016 world champion shared a picture on Instagram showing him enjoying lunch with members of the tifosi. Smiling alongside Ferrari’s famously passionate fanbase, Rosberg showed off his meal courtesy of F1’s official pasta partner, Barilla. His caption read: “Lunch breaks in Monza F1! Grazie @barilla e a tutti i Tifosi! Who’s your favorite today?”

To casual observers, the post appeared harmless. But for Ferrari’s loyal supporters, it carried a more ominous meaning. Many fans quickly linked the photo to the ongoing narrative of the “Nico Rosberg curse,” a lighthearted but persistent trend in F1 fandom.

The so-called curse suggests that whenever Rosberg publicly supports or highlights a driver, team, or even a car through social media, misfortune tends to follow soon after. From unlucky mechanical failures to disappointing race results, Rosberg’s well-meaning posts have earned a reputation for bringing bad luck to their subjects.

This time, fans feared Ferrari had become the latest victim. The Scuderia’s drivers, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, headed into their home race under intense pressure to deliver a podium at Monza. But despite solid performances, the team ultimately missed out on the top three once again.

Leclerc drove strongly, securing a respectable P4 finish, while Hamilton fought back to climb four positions after serving a grid penalty. Though both left Italy with reasons for cautious optimism, Ferrari supporters were left deflated by the absence of their cars on the iconic Monza podium.

Even before the race began, fans had flooded Rosberg’s Instagram comments to warn of impending disaster. One exasperated tifoso wrote: “Did he just curse us tifosi…?” Another sarcastically posted: “RIP Ferrari,” while another fan gloomily concluded: “There goes Ferrari’s race.”

The sense of dread was so strong that some fans even adjusted their expectations downward in anticipation of disaster. One joked: “Does this mean double DNS for Ferrari this time…??” Thankfully, both Leclerc and Hamilton made it to the chequered flag without catastrophe, but the lingering feeling was that Rosberg’s post had once again cast an unlucky shadow.

Though there is no evidence to support the idea of an actual curse, the running gag has become a quirky subplot in recent F1 seasons. For Ferrari, whose home crowd at Monza demands nothing short of glory, the lighthearted superstition has only added to the frustration of watching rivals occupy the podium spots.

As for Rosberg, he likely meant nothing more than to celebrate Italian culture, good food, and the enthusiasm of Ferrari’s fans. Still, many supporters are now urging him to think twice before showing public support for their team in the future.

Whether or not the curse is real, Ferrari’s inability to claim silverware in front of their tifosi keeps the legend alive. And for some fans, Rosberg’s innocent pasta lunch will be remembered as the meal that jinxed their Monza weekend.
