F1 race winner’s car cleared after detailed FIA post-race inspection

Ahead of the 2025 Singapore Grand Prix, the FIA has confirmed that an F1 race winner’s car underwent a thorough inspection following the previous round in Azerbaijan. The governing body revealed that Carlos Sainz’s Williams was randomly selected for detailed checks after his impressive podium finish in Baku — his first since joining James Vowles’ team at the beginning of the 2025 season.

During the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Sainz delivered a standout performance, qualifying on the front row alongside reigning world champion Max Verstappen — his best grid position since moving to Williams. Verstappen went on to claim his fourth victory of the year, strengthening his bid to stay in the title fight, while Sainz crossed the finish line in third place behind George Russell, marking a historic first podium for both himself and the team this season.

In line with standard post-race procedures, the FIA conducted an in-depth inspection on one of the top ten finishers from the race, with Sainz’s car — number 55 — randomly chosen for analysis. According to the FIA’s Technical Delegate’s Report, the inspection focused on the car’s rear brake system. Specific elements examined included brake system failure modes, the powered brake control unit, rear caliper pressure, and the homologation status of all relevant sensors and actuators.

Additionally, engineers assessed the potential for any mechanisms capable of generating asymmetric braking torque across the rear axle. The inspection also compared the technical schematics submitted by Williams with the actual hardware installed in the car to ensure consistency and regulatory compliance.

The comprehensive review was overseen by FIA technical delegate Jo Bauer, who confirmed that all inspected components met the requirements of the 2025 Formula 1 Technical Regulations. The report concluded that no irregularities were found in the rear brake system or any associated parts of Sainz’s FW47.

As a result, Sainz’s third-place finish and the valuable championship points earned in Baku remain valid, with no penalties or disqualifications applied. The result stands as a major milestone for Williams, marking their first podium appearance since the early 2020s and reinforcing the progress made under team principal James Vowles.

With the FIA’s announcement now settling any uncertainty, Sainz and Williams will head into the Singapore Grand Prix with renewed confidence. The Spanish driver will be aiming to build on his breakthrough performance and continue challenging the front-runners on the demanding Marina Bay Street Circuit, while Verstappen looks to close the gap in the championship fight after his latest win.
