Lance Stroll Called to Stewards After Unusual FP1 Collision with Charles Leclerc at Monaco Grand Prix
Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll has been summoned to the stewards following a strange and costly collision with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc during Free Practice 1 (FP1) at the Monaco Grand Prix.
The incident occurred just minutes into the session at the iconic Fairmont Hairpin one of the slowest and tightest corners on the Formula 1 calendar. As Stroll moved aside to let Mercedes junior Kimi Antonelli pass, he then steered back onto the racing line to navigate the turn. However, he failed to realize that Charles Leclerc was rapidly approaching from behind. The result was a sharp impact, with Leclerc slamming into the rear of Stroll’s car.
Leclerc’s front wing was knocked off in the collision, bringing out a red flag as marshals worked to clear the debris. Ferrari quickly repaired the Monegasque driver’s car, allowing him to rejoin the session shortly after the restart. However, for Stroll, the damage was far more severe. Aston Martin later confirmed that the collision had caused substantial damage to the rear suspension and necessitated a gearbox change — forcing the Canadian to remain in the garage for the rest of the session.
Speaking after the incident, Stroll indicated he hadn’t received any radio warning from the team that Leclerc was also approaching when he returned to the racing line. This lack of communication could become a key point of discussion during his meeting with the stewards.
The stewards have scheduled the hearing for 15:00 local time, approximately 30 minutes after FP1 ends. It remains to be seen whether Stroll will receive a formal penalty for the incident, which disrupted both his and Leclerc’s preparations for the weekend.
With Monaco’s unforgiving layout and the high stakes of qualifying, any loss of track time or grid penalties can be especially damaging. This early drama has already added tension to what promises to be a thrilling Grand Prix weekend.
