F1 Teams Face Unique FIA Curfew Ruling Ahead of Monaco Grand Prix
Formula 1 teams are preparing for an unusual curfew regulation at this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix, following an official announcement from the FIA.
In what has been described as a “unique” measure, the FIA has confirmed reduced curfew times across three specific Restricted Periods – Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday – aimed at addressing the logistical difficulties posed by the narrow streets and tight schedule of the Monte Carlo circuit.
Under the new rule, each of the Restricted Periods will see the usual curfew shortened by three hours. During these times, team personnel are strictly prohibited from working on the cars or remaining in the paddock. However, a concession has been made, allowing each team to designate up to six operational staff to work solely on tyre preparations.
The curfews are structured as follows:
- Restricted Period 1: Begins 42 hours and ends 29 hours before the scheduled start of FP1.
- Restricted Period 2: Runs from 18 hours to 4 hours before FP1.
- Restricted Period 3: Starts 14 hours and ends 3 hours before FP3, with additional time possibly added if the gap after FP2 exceeds four hours.
Each team is granted a limited number of exceptions: four for the first period, three for the second, and two for the third. Breaching these exceptions could result in severe penalties. If a team goes beyond their allowed exceptions, both drivers will be required to start Sunday’s race from the pit lane.
Earlier this season, McLaren breached curfew regulations at the Bahrain Grand Prix, but avoided punishment as it fell within their allocated exceptions.
The FIA’s move comes as part of its continued efforts to balance regulatory enforcement with the logistical realities of Formula 1’s most challenging street circuit.
