Fernando Alonso Reveals Retirement Plans Amid Toughest F1 Season Start

Two-time Formula 1 World Champion Fernando Alonso has shed light on his retirement plans as he battles through one of the most difficult starts to a season in his career.

Now in his 22nd F1 season—and third with Aston Martin—the 43-year-old Spaniard has finally broken his silence about when he might walk away from the sport. Despite only recently scoring his first points of the 2025 season at his home Grand Prix, Alonso remains focused and committed to competing.

While speculation about his future continues, Alonso revealed that his decision will likely hinge on Aston Martin’s 2026 car, which is being developed under the guidance of legendary F1 designer Adrian Newey.

“It will be a very important one, yes. Not the final one,” Alonso said when asked if the 2026 project would influence his retirement decision.
“I need to see how next year begins and how motivated I feel. Each season brings a different mindset—how you perform, how competitive you feel, your physical and mental state, and even personal or family matters—all these things factor into big decisions.”

Alonso, whose current contract runs through the end of 2025, suggested that he’s still enjoying life in the sport. Despite Aston Martin’s struggles this season, he remains motivated by the challenge.

“Right now, I don’t feel it’s time to stop,” he continued.
“I still get excited every time I step into the car. Even after tough weekends, I look forward to the next race, to improving and bouncing back.”

With Newey’s arrival at Aston Martin offering new hope for future competitiveness, Alonso is intrigued by what lies ahead. The team is counting on Newey’s expertise to help them adapt early to the sweeping regulation changes coming in 2026.

Still, Alonso remains realistic about the inevitable end of his F1 career.

“The stopwatch will ultimately decide when it’s time,” he said.
“If I ever start to feel uncompetitive, or if physical issues arise, that could signal the end. But for now, I’m healthy, I feel strong, and I’m performing well.”

Alonso currently holds the second-longest winless streak in F1 history, with 209 races since his last victory. Yet, despite the numbers, he insists the fire to compete still burns brightly.

With the next race scheduled for June 13–15 at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Canada, Alonso is focused on progress rather than retirement—and he’s not ready to close the chapter on his F1 journey just yet.
