Fernando Alonso Hints at Exciting Post-Formula 1 Plans
Fernando Alonso, Aston Martin’s experienced driver, has shared insights about his future after potentially stepping away from Formula 1 at the end of the 2026 season. The 43-year-old Spaniard, whose current contract with Aston Martin runs through 2026, believes this could mark the end of his storied F1 career.
Alonso remains open to extending his time in Formula 1, but only if Aston Martin proves competitive under the upcoming regulation changes. “Probably – or at least to start with – it will be my last season in Formula 1 because my contract finishes at the end of 2026,” Alonso explained. “If the 2026 season is running smoothly and we’re having a good time, I’ll consider racing one more year. But I’ll take every race as if it’s my last and enjoy every second.”
Aston Martin has been making strides to become a title contender, including unveiling a state-of-the-art facility at Silverstone and securing renowned F1 designer Adrian Newey. However, recent struggles have cast some doubt on their trajectory, and Alonso acknowledges that time may not be on his side given his age and the competitive nature of the sport.
Despite potentially bidding farewell to Formula 1, Alonso has no intention of leaving the world of motorsport. Speaking on the Spanish podcast Asi Empece, he revealed plans to pursue victory in the Dakar Rally, a legendary and grueling off-road competition.
“One of the challenges I still want to conquer is the Dakar Rally,” Alonso said. “Rallying is so different from formula racing. You rely on a co-driver for navigation and use unique techniques to stabilize the car through the stages. It’s a completely different skill set that excites me.”
Alonso’s passion for racing remains unwavering. “I’ve had a steering wheel in my hands since I was three. After 40 years of driving, I don’t think I could just stop and never race again,” he added.
Reflecting on his transition, Alonso remarked, “When I stop with Formula 1, something like the Dakar or another championship will reignite my passion for learning and competing.”
With his focus still on achieving success in F1, Alonso’s commitment to motorsport ensures that his racing journey is far from over.
