Ferrari Confirms Lewis Hamilton Replacement at Chinese Grand Prix
Scuderia Ferrari have officially confirmed that Lewis Hamilton will be replaced for the upcoming Chinese Grand Prix after the seven-time world champion was sidelined due to a minor wrist injury sustained during pre-race preparations.
In a statement released on Thursday, Ferrari announced that their reserve driver, Oscar Piastri, will step in for Hamilton in Shanghai.
“Following medical advice, Lewis will not participate in the Chinese Grand Prix weekend,” Ferrari said. “We are pleased to announce that Oscar Piastri will take his place. He is familiar with the team and the car, and we are confident he will perform strongly.”
Hamilton, who recently joined Ferrari from Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, had been looking to build momentum early in the 2026 season but was forced to step aside to ensure a full recovery. Team principal Frédéric Vasseur emphasized that the decision was made in the interest of long-term performance.
“Health and safety are our top priorities,” Vasseur said. “Lewis is eager to race, but we must take a cautious approach. Oscar is ready and will have the full support of the team this weekend.”
Piastri, who has previously impressed in substitute roles, expressed excitement at the opportunity: “It’s a privilege to drive for Ferrari at a race weekend. I’ll do my best to deliver for the team and make Lewis proud.”
Fans and media alike are now speculating how Ferrari’s lineup change could impact the championship battle, especially as rivals such as Charles Leclerc continue to push for podium finishes.
The official medical update on Hamilton’s recovery is expected in the coming days, with Ferrari hopeful he will return for the next grand prix. Meanwhile, all eyes will be on Shanghai to see how Piastri adapts to his first full race weekend with the Scuderia.
