Ferrari Faces FIA Investigation Over Pit Lane Protocol Breach at Imola
Ferrari has found itself in the spotlight for the wrong reasons at the start of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix weekend, as the FIA investigates a potential breach of procedural regulations during the opening free practice session in Imola.
The issue centres around Charles Leclerc’s SF-24, with the FIA flagging the team for modifying the front tyres of the car after a completed run, while it was stationary in the garage, and before sending it out again on the same set. This action is not compliant with Formula 1’s strict tyre handling regulations, which are designed to maintain fairness and safety across the grid.
FIA technical delegate Jo Bauer noted the irregularity and has referred the matter to the race stewards for further assessment. Should the breach be confirmed, Ferrari could face a range of penalties, from a reprimand to more serious sporting consequences, depending on the severity of the infraction.
The timing of the incident is particularly unfortunate for Ferrari, as this weekend’s race at Imola is one of two home events on the calendar for the iconic Scuderia, with the Italian Grand Prix at Monza still to come later in the season.
Leclerc’s on-track performance did little to lift the mood in the Ferrari garage. The Monegasque driver ended the session in 12th place, visibly struggling with his car and reporting discomfort due to his helmet lifting at high speeds—a distraction that likely impacted his performance.
Meanwhile, newly signed teammate Lewis Hamilton enjoyed a far more encouraging session. The seven-time world champion showed strong pace throughout, finishing fifth fastest and providing a glimmer of hope for Ferrari’s weekend prospects.
As the investigation unfolds, all eyes will remain on the FIA stewards’ verdict, which could influence Ferrari’s strategy and morale heading into the rest of the weekend.
