Ferrari to Investigate Lewis Hamilton’s Performance Dip After Disappointing Spanish GP
Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has confirmed the team will investigate Lewis Hamilton’s lacklustre showing at the Spanish Grand Prix, following what the seven-time world champion called a “terrible” weekend.
Although Hamilton out-qualified teammate Charles Leclerc on Saturday, he struggled to maintain pace on race day. By lap 10, he was instructed to let Leclerc through, and his difficulties continued into the final stages, eventually finishing sixth after being overtaken by Nico Hulkenberg during a safety car restart. Leclerc, meanwhile, went on to finish on the podium.
Speaking to Sky Sports Germany, Vasseur praised Ferrari’s recent form but admitted Hamilton’s performance in Barcelona raised concerns.
“I’m pleased overall, but it was a chaotic race,” said Vasseur. “There are some questions about the tyres—they performed better at the end than at the beginning. Still, we’ve had strong results in Imola, Monaco, and now Barcelona. That puts us firmly in the battle for second in the constructors’ standings.
“Hamilton’s pace was generally okay until the final stint. There was a noticeable drop-off—we need to understand what happened. Something went wrong in that last phase of the race.”
Hamilton himself couldn’t pinpoint the issue, describing the car’s balance as the worst he’d experienced all season. The unexpected drop in performance has prompted speculation, with former teammate Nico Rosberg suggesting age might be playing a role in the veteran driver’s recent inconsistencies.
Vasseur later hinted at a problem with Hamilton’s car occurring before the safety car, though he declined to reveal further details. The team is now focused on uncovering the cause during the upcoming race break, as Hamilton trails Leclerc by 23 points in the drivers’ championship.
