Lance Stroll Withdraws from Spanish Grand Prix Due to Injury Flare-Up, FIA Confirms

In a surprising turn of events, Lance Stroll has officially withdrawn from the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix, as confirmed by the FIA. The Aston Martin driver was forced to pull out of the race weekend due to a recurrence of pain in his wrist and hand, linked to a previous injury, dealing an unexpected blow to the team’s campaign.

Stroll had qualified 14th after being eliminated in Q2 on Saturday. However, confusion arose when he failed to attend the mandatory post-qualifying weigh-in—a standard FIA protocol all drivers are required to follow. His absence prompted the stewards to issue a summons, raising eyebrows across the paddock. Initially, this appeared to be a simple procedural mishap, but it quickly became apparent that there was more to the story.

Shortly after the incident, the FIA postponed the summons hearing, citing “unforeseen circumstances.” Aston Martin later provided clarity by releasing a statement revealing that Stroll had been experiencing significant discomfort in his wrist. The pain is believed to stem from a cycling accident he suffered in 2023, which resulted in a wrist fracture. Despite having raced through that injury in the past, this latest flare-up appears to have intensified following the physically demanding qualifying session.

Medical professionals assessed Stroll’s condition on Saturday, and after evaluation, the team opted to withdraw him from Sunday’s race to prevent worsening the injury. Given the high physical demands of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya—with its fast corners and intense braking zones—Aston Martin made the cautious decision to prioritize Stroll’s long-term health.

This move comes despite Stroll’s history of resilience. He previously returned to action just weeks after his original wrist fracture and completed races with limited mobility. However, this time, the pain proved too severe for him to continue safely.

Aston Martin has yet to announce whether a reserve driver will step in, or if they will proceed with only Fernando Alonso representing the team. The FIA’s handling of the situation reflects their commitment to enforcing both procedural rules and medical standards in F1.

Fans will now await updates on Stroll’s recovery, with hopes that he’ll be fit to return in time for the next race. His absence this weekend leaves a noticeable gap on the grid.
