McLaren Avoids Penalty After Norris Cockpit Incident in Miami GP Practice

McLaren has escaped a penalty from the FIA following an investigation into a bizarre incident during the first practice session (FP1) of the Miami Grand Prix. Lando Norris reported finding loose tools, including an LED torch, in his car’s cockpit shortly after leaving the pits. He promptly returned to the garage to have them removed.

The FIA scrutinized McLaren for a potential breach of regulations concerning the unsafe release of a car (Article 34.14 c)). While such infractions can lead to grid penalties, the stewards accepted McLaren’s explanation of a genuine mistake.

In their official statement, the FIA acknowledged that McLaren admitted to the error of leaving two torches in Norris’s cockpit. However, they also highlighted that Norris quickly identified the issue and secured the items before safely returning to the pits.

The stewards concluded that although the car was released in an unsafe condition, Norris’s rapid response prevented any dangerous situation. Consequently, McLaren has been issued with an official warning, and Lando Norris will face no further penalties for the incident.

This decision allows Norris to continue his Miami Grand Prix weekend unimpeded. He currently trails teammate Oscar Piastri in the championship, having recovered to fourth place in the Saudi Arabian GP after a qualifying incident.
