FIA Penalizes Lando Norris Ahead of Monaco GP Amid Tightened Regulations
In the lead-up to the highly anticipated Monaco Grand Prix, the FIA has issued a penalty to McLaren driver Lando Norris for a breach related to newly enforced technical regulations. The penalty stems from concerns over flexible aerodynamic components, specifically the rear wing, which may have failed to comply with the FIA’s updated deflection standards.
These stricter regulations are part of a broader effort by Formula 1’s governing body to clamp down on aerodynamic elasticity—where car parts flex under pressure to deliver a performance edge. To address this, McLaren has already made significant updates to the MCL39, reinforcing key elements to ensure they meet the FIA’s more rigorous compliance checks.
In addition to technical changes, teams must also adapt to a new rule introduced for this year’s Monaco race: a mandatory two-stop strategy. Drivers will now be required to make at least two pit stops and use a minimum of two different dry tire compounds, a move aimed at increasing on-track excitement and reducing the often-static nature of the Monte Carlo race.
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has affirmed the team’s commitment to aligning with the FIA’s goals, emphasizing that all car updates are aimed at both maximizing performance and staying within the rules. Despite the setback for Norris, McLaren’s proactive stance may still give them a competitive edge on one of the sport’s most challenging circuits.
