As Formula 1 gears up for round seven of the 2025 championship at the iconic Imola circuit, the FIA has introduced a new mandatory tyre regulation for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix weekend.
With McLaren’s Oscar Piastri leading the drivers’ standings by 16 points ahead of team-mate Lando Norris and the team enjoying a dominant 105-point lead in the constructors’ championship, all eyes are on whether the papaya outfit can continue their impressive form in Italy.
A key factor in McLaren’s recent success has been their exceptional tyre management, a feat made possible by what experts are calling a clever aerodynamic “trick.” But teams will face new challenges at Imola, as the FIA has mandated the use of the C4 and C5 tyre compounds for the race — a shift from the C3 and C4 that were compulsory in Miami.
Introduction of New Tyre: The C6
In addition to the new mandatory selection, the FIA has confirmed that teams will have access to the brand-new C6 compound for the first time this season. Although not yet used in a race, the C6 has been tested by several teams and is expected to make its competitive debut in qualifying due to its ultra-soft grip levels. It may also play a role in Sunday’s race strategies, particularly for teams opting for two-stop tactics.
With the C6 being the softest compound ever introduced in the 2025 tyre range, teams could gain crucial time in both qualifying and short race stints though managing degradation will be critical.
Weather Could Play a Role
Adding to the uncertainty, rain showers are currently in the forecast for Sunday’s main event, meaning intermediate and full wet tyres may also come into play.
