Formula 1’s governing body, the FIA, has officially confirmed that Oscar Piastri’s McLaren MCL39 was in full compliance with the 2025 technical regulations after undergoing an extensive inspection following the Miami Grand Prix.
McLaren, the reigning Constructors’ Champions, have kicked off the 2025 season in dominant fashion, securing victories in five out of the opening six races. Oscar Piastri, who has emerged as the standout driver so far this year, claimed his fourth win in the last five races at the Miami GP. His consistent performances have earned him a 16-point lead over team-mate Lando Norris in the Drivers’ Championship standings.
In the aftermath of the Miami GP, the FIA selected Piastri’s car—designated as car number 81—for a detailed technical investigation. This is standard procedure in Formula 1, where cars finishing within the top ten are often subjected to more rigorous checks. From this group, one or more cars are randomly chosen for additional scrutiny by the FIA’s Formula 1 technical delegate, Jo Bauer.
According to a report from PlanetF1.com, the focus of the inspection was believed to be on the MCL39’s rear braking system. This component is suspected to play a crucial role in McLaren’s recent competitive edge, especially in terms of tyre management. The MCL39 has shown remarkable consistency and control during races, which many attribute to its advanced braking and suspension design.
The FIA’s in-depth inspection included a comprehensive review of the wheel bodywork assemblies across all four corners of the vehicle. These physical checks aimed to verify the car’s compliance with the sport’s strict technical specifications and ensure that no part of the design offered an unfair advantage or breached any regulations.
Ahead of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola, the FIA officially released its findings. In a report authored by Jo Bauer, the FIA stated that car number 81 passed all necessary inspections without any issues. “After the race in Miami, car number 81 was randomly selected among the top ten cars for extensive physical inspections,” Bauer noted in his statement. “The wheel bodywork assemblies were subject to these inspections, and all required checks were performed on each corner of the car.”
The clean bill of health for McLaren’s car is a significant statement, especially in light of their recent dominance and the scrutiny that often follows a team in top form. While rivals may have questioned whether McLaren’s rapid progress was entirely within the rulebook, the FIA’s verdict confirms that their success is backed by legal and compliant engineering.
As the F1 circus heads to Imola for the next round, McLaren carries strong momentum, with both of their drivers leading the title chase and their car now officially cleared of any regulatory concerns. With the MCL39 passing one of the season’s most thorough inspections, the team can focus on maintaining its competitive edge and extending its lead in both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships.
