FIA Clears Lando Norris After Unusual Pit Exit Probe at Saudi Arabian GP
The FIA has confirmed that Lando Norris will not face a penalty following a strange and short-lived investigation during the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, allowing the McLaren driver to keep his fourth-place result.
The incident occurred on lap 41 when Norris was flagged for possibly breaching pit exit rules. The issue stemmed from whether he had crossed the white line exiting the pit lane, as per the race director’s instructions. It was unclear whether Norris’s front-right tyre had gone completely over the line, which would have constituted a violation.
After reviewing the footage, the stewards decided no action was necessary, clearing Norris of any wrongdoing. This decision allowed him to continue chasing down Charles Leclerc in the final laps, though he ultimately fell short of the podium.
The incident sparked some debate among pundits and analysts. Sky Sports’ Martin Brundle said, “As long as a tyre is on the line, it should be fine you don’t have to be completely within the lines.” F1 expert Bernie Collins, referencing the race director’s notes, added, “It clearly states drivers must follow procedures at pit entry and exit. Onboard footage made it tough to see, but it looked like the front-right tyre may have strayed too far.”
Despite this, the FIA announced—while Collins was still offering her take that the investigation was closed and no further action would be taken.
Norris finished fourth, just behind Leclerc, while teammate Oscar Piastri secured the win and moved ahead of him in the championship standings.
The swift resolution avoided further controversy in an already tense and action-packed race weekend in Jeddah.
