FIA confirm Verstappen penalty with additional punishment
The FIA has confirmed an additional penalty for Max Verstappen following his collision with Oscar Piastri during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
The incident occurred on the opening lap when Verstappen attempted an aggressive move on Piastri at the first corner, leading to contact between the two cars. Both drivers spun off, falling to the back of the field.
Verstappen was deemed at fault and received a 10-second time penalty, which he served during a pit stop.
Despite expressing frustration over the decision, the FIA stood firm, citing Verstappen’s repeated aggressive racing maneuvers throughout the 2024 season as a factor in their ruling.
The collision briefly jeopardized McLaren’s chances of securing their first constructors’ championship in 26 years.
However, the team ultimately prevailed, with Lando Norris taking a commanding victory at Yas Marina Circuit.
In addition to the in-race penalty, the FIA conducted a post-race review and imposed an extra punishment on Verstappen.
Two penalty points were added to his Super Licence, bringing his total to eight within a 12-month period.
If Verstappen accumulates four more points, he risks a race ban, a sanction Kevin Magnussen faced earlier in the season.
The added penalty points highlight growing concerns about Verstappen’s driving style, which has been under scrutiny for a series of aggressive moves throughout the year.
The champion now faces increased pressure to race cleanly for the remainder of the season to avoid further disciplinary action.
