Fernando Alonso Ruled Out of Spanish Grand Prix Due to Health Concerns, FIA Confirms

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has officially confirmed that Fernando Alonso will not participate in the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix. The decision was reached following discussions between the FIA, Aston Martin, and medical professionals. Alonso’s absence is being attributed to ongoing health issues, although neither the FIA nor the team has disclosed the exact nature of the condition. This marks the two-time world champion’s first missed race of the 2025 Formula 1 season.

Alonso, one of the most experienced and popular drivers on the grid, has reportedly been dealing with physical discomfort that has raised concerns over his ability to compete at the highest level safely. According to sources close to Aston Martin, the issue has been affecting him for some time and has now reached a point where stepping back was deemed the most responsible course of action. The FIA emphasized that the move was made purely with the driver’s health and long-term well-being in mind, especially in light of the demanding nature of the F1 calendar.

The 2025 season has already proven to be a difficult one for Alonso. He has endured a string of unfortunate incidents, including technical failures and early race retirements. Notably, he was forced to withdraw from the Australian Grand Prix following a crash and also missed the Chinese Grand Prix due to an overheating issue in his Aston Martin. These disruptions have made it difficult for Alonso to find consistency this year and have further strained his efforts to contribute to the team’s performance.

In light of Alonso’s withdrawal from his home race, speculation has turned toward who will fill the vacant seat at Aston Martin for the weekend. While the team has yet to make an official announcement, Brazilian reserve driver Felipe Drugovich is considered the most likely candidate to step in. Drugovich, who won the Formula 2 championship in 2022, has served as Aston Martin’s reserve driver for the past two seasons and has participated in several practice sessions. His familiarity with the team and the car makes him a logical choice for a temporary replacement.

Aston Martin released a brief statement expressing support for their star driver, emphasizing that his health remains the top priority. “Fernando is an integral part of our team, both on and off the track. While we’re disappointed that he won’t be competing in front of his home fans, his recovery is what matters most. We look forward to welcoming him back when he’s ready,” said a team spokesperson.

Fans around the world, especially in Spain, will no doubt be disappointed by the news, as Alonso’s presence at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is always a major draw. However, this development highlights Formula 1’s growing emphasis on prioritizing driver welfare over competitive pressure. While Alonso’s absence will certainly be felt, the hope remains that he will make a full recovery and return to racing later in the season.
